A quick glimpse at the cast for this film would make any horror fan giddy with glee. The actual movie doesn't live up to those high expectations, but it's far from being all bad. Desi Arnaz Jr. (!) plays an author who makes a crazy $20,000 bet with his publisher that he could write a great novel in only 24 hours. To do so, the publisher gives him the keys to an old abandoned house where he won't be disturbed. Not true. Once he gets there he is interrupted by a multitude of guests including a family which consists of John Carradine, Sheila Keith, Peter Cushing and Vincent Price. They are gathered there in a twisted family reunion to release their brother from the room he's been imprisoned in for forty years. Even Christopher Lee drops by as Corrigan, the man who has just purchased the house. 根据霍桑同名短篇小说集改编，纳撒尼尔·霍桑（Nathaniel Hawthorne，1804年7月4日—1864年5月19日），19世纪前半期美国最伟大的小说家，毕业于美国缅因州博多因学院。霍桑的作品都是世界文学史上不可多得的经典名著，代表作品有短篇小说集《古宅青苔》、《重讲一遍的故事》等，长篇小说《红字》、《带七个尖顶的阁楼》、《福谷传奇》、《玉石人像》等。霍桑的短篇小说题材丰富，表现的时代也不同。但他最偏爱的另一大主题是揭示人性之"恶"。他把抽象的"恶"当作一切社会问题的根源。在他看来，一切社会问题，人与人之间的矛盾、犯罪现象等等的根源都不存在于社会物质生活当中，而存在于人性之"恶"。这一观点可以说基本来自加尔文教教义中"原罪"与"内在的堕落"等观念的影响。他认为要消灭外部世界的一切恶行，只有从人心做起，从扫除人之恶做起，声称:"内在世界一旦净化，外在世界激荡着的许多罪恶都会自行消失。"他偏好描写超自然的，怪诞的，恐怖的现象或阴暗反常的心理活动，借以挖掘那隐秘的"恶"。
